Mary Okon Ononokpono is an award winning writer, artist and illustrator. Born in Calabar, Nigeria, Mary now lives and works in London, UK. Following a return trip to Nigeria in 2012, Mary began to seriously focus on writing literature. Mary’s work explores the rich cultural landscapes of pre-colonial Africa, with specific focus on how the past intersects with and continues to inform both present and future.
Mary is the winner of the 2014 Golden Baobab Prize for Early Chapter Books, and was long-listed for the 2014 Commonword Diversity for Children Writing Prize. Mary’s work can be found in Terra Incognita, a speculative fiction anthology published by Short Story Day Africa in 2014.
Mary is working on completion of her first novel aimed at the adult market, a work of historical literary fiction set in the pre-colonial trading town of Old Calabar. Mary is also working on completion of her second children’s book, while studying history full time at SOAS, University of London.
